English Typing Test
Ten, twenty or thirty minutes against a live clock. Real speed, real accuracy, and every mistake counted.
How it works
Pick your length
Ten, twenty or thirty minutes to match a real skill test, or two and five minutes for a quick warm-up when you only want to check where you are.
Enter your details
Your name and email, so the result is yours and we can show it to you. The clock does not start until you type your first character.
Type, and read the report
Each character turns green or red as you go. At the end you get net and gross speed, accuracy, every mistake counted, and what to work on next.
What speed do you actually need?
Typing is one of the few parts of a recruitment process where the pass mark is written down in advance, which makes it one of the easiest to prepare for. These are the figures that come up most often. They are an orientation, not a rule — the notification you are applying to is the only authority on its own requirement.
| Post | Usual requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL — LDC / DEO | 35 words per minute in English | About 10,500 key depressions an hour |
| SSC CGL — Tax Assistant | 8,000 key depressions an hour | Measured on correct entries |
| CPCT (Madhya Pradesh) | 30 words per minute in English | 15 minute passage |
| High Court / District Court clerk | 30 to 40 words per minute | Varies by state; read the notice |
| Junior Assistant / Office Assistant | 25 to 35 words per minute | Accuracy thresholds usually apply |
Key depressions per hour and words per minute are not interchangeable: divide key depressions by 300 for a rough words-per-minute figure. Always check the wording in the notice — see our disclaimer.
How to get faster without losing accuracy
Almost everyone trying to improve makes the same mistake: they type as fast as they possibly can, collect a long list of errors, and repeat. Speed built that way plateaus quickly, because the fingers are learning the wrong movement and then learning to repair it.
The method that works is dull and reliable. Type at the fastest speed at which you stay above ninety five per cent accurate, and no faster. Hold that until it feels easy, then push slightly. Keep your eyes on the passage rather than the keyboard, return your fingers to the home row after every reach, and practise the things you avoid — capitals, commas, and numbers, which slow down nearly everybody.
Short sessions beat long ones. Fifteen focused minutes a day will move your speed further in a month than three hours once a week, because the skill is consolidated between sessions rather than during them.
Common questions
How is my typing speed calculated?
A word is counted as five characters, including spaces and punctuation, which is the standard every skill test uses. Gross speed is everything you typed divided by five, over the minutes you took. Net speed is that figure with any uncorrected mistakes deducted, and it is the one that matters, because a page full of errors is not usable work however fast it was produced.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross counts every character you entered. Net subtracts the characters that are still wrong when the clock stops. Somebody typing at 60 gross with 30 errors left behind will score well below somebody typing at 45 gross with none, and that is deliberate: recruitment skill tests mark on accurate output, not on raw keystrokes.
How is accuracy measured here?
Against your keystrokes, not against the text you leave at the end. If you type a wrong character and then correct it, that still counts against accuracy, because it happened, it cost you time, and in a real test it would have cost you a mark. Grading only the finished text would score a heavily corrected passage as perfect and teach the wrong habit.
What typing speed do I need for a government job?
Most clerical and data entry posts in India ask for 30 to 35 words per minute in English, with an accuracy threshold alongside it. Some posts are specified in key depressions per hour instead — 8,000 an hour is roughly 27 words per minute, and 10,500 an hour is roughly 35. The notification you are applying to is the only authority on its own requirement.
Does the passage change every time?
Yes. Passages are drawn in a shuffled order, so you do not see the same one twice until you have been through them all, and a fresh paragraph is added as you approach the end of the current one. A thirty minute test never runs out of text, and you cannot memorise your way to a better score.
Can I correct my mistakes while typing?
Yes, backspace works normally. Correcting an error removes it from your net speed, because the final text is then right, but the keystroke you wasted still counts against your accuracy. Whether to stop and correct or carry on is a judgement worth practising, since different skill tests treat it differently.
Why do you ask for my name and email?
So the attempt belongs to somebody and we can show you your result. We store it with your score. We will only email you if you tick the box on the form agreeing to it, and you can ask us to stop at any time. See our privacy policy for what we keep and for how long.
Is this test free?
Yes, completely, with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you take it. Nothing you type is stored — only the figures at the end, which are what let us show you your own progress.
